The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is calling all local artists, architects, and carpenters as they prepare for the Garden Casitas exhibition that will take place in 2019. “Garden Casitas: Playhouses Designed with Nature in Mind” hopes all applicants and participants collaborate with other creative experts to design and build amazing, eco-friendly playhouses for children in the community. Applicants are encouraged to keep descriptive terms in mind such as: colorful, rustic, fantastical, and imaginative. This is the first year that the Botanic Garden will host this playhouse building competition. However, if it is widely received, they hope to continue hosting in the future.
Participants are strongly encouraged to use natural, plant-based materials to build their playhouses. The ultimate goal of this art exhibition is to educate children and adults alike on the importance of sustainability and using natural resources in creative ways. For example, the Botanic Garden is conscious about their use of water and other resources. Gardeners constantly experiment with California native plants to find more sustainable ways of gardening that still allow the plants to thrive. The Botanic Garden often has classes for local gardeners and environmentalists to learn more about how to create an efficient, eco-friendly garden. Upcoming classes include: Garden Planning with the Experts, Garden Tour: ShinKanAn Tea House, Hands-on Drip Irrigation Workshop, and Good Fungi, Healthy Roots, Happy Natives.
This exhibition hopes to teach children the importance of spending time outside while learning more about nature in the Santa Barbara area. The Botanic Garden plans to schedule additional educational programs for when the exhibit opens with their other wide array of educational opportunities for students. For example, many local schools take field trips to the Botanic Garden to learn about plant science and ecology with hands-on, interactive experiences. On the Botanic Garden’s website, there are even pre-made curricula and lesson plans geared towards elementary and middle school classes with lessons such as “Sensory Adventures,” “Flower Power: Pondering Pollination,” “Amazing Acorns: the Chumash staple food,” and “Hunting for Animal Signs.” The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden deeply values education and knowledge about gardening based on one’s region and aims to teach the Santa Barbara community about the care and keeping of native California plants.
The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden anticipates a turnout of about 30,000 visitors to come enjoy the Garden Casitas exhibition starting in July of 2019. The display will remain open to the public until December 2019. Applicants may participate alone or as a part of a collaborative team with applications due on November 1st, 2018, giving plenty of time to brainstorm and participate in this educational, creative opportunity.
