Golden Eagle Award winners honored

Every year since 1995, Westmont has honored an athlete from each intercollegiate athletics team with the Golden Eagle Award. The Westmont Athletics website says, “The honor is given to an athlete for their accomplishments athletically, academically, spiritually and socially. Each recipient must be at least a sophomore in standing, possess a minimum 3.2 GPA and have the nomination and support of their coach.”
Last Tuesday, 12 recipients, six men and six women, were honored for their performances in the 2018-2019 seasons. The event was held at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort. The honorees are all listed below.
For the Men’s Soccer team, senior Sam Martin was honored with the award. He has a 3.74 GPA while majoring in Kinesiology.
For Women’s Cross Country the award went to senior Morgan Erickson, who finished with a 3.48 GPA. She is majoring in Psychology.
Madeleine Berthoud was the recipient for the Women’s Soccer team. She is a junior majoring in Biology and has a 3.81 GPA.
The Men’s Cross Country award winner was senior Blake Fonda. He has a 3.7 GPA and is getting his degree in Chemistry.
Cassidy Rea, a junior on the Women’s Volleyball team, was double majoring in History and Political Science. She wins the award with a 3.91 GPA.
The recipient for the Men’s Basketball program was Jordan Spaschak. He is a junior majoring in Liberal Studies, with a 3.38 GPA.
Jordan Strandness was the award winner for the Men’s Tennis team. He is a senior double majoring in English and Philosophy with a 3.91 GPA.
The Women’s Track and Field award winner was Dana Nemitz. Her GPA is 3.70 and she is a senior majoring in Biology.
Jackson Nemitz was the recipient for the Men’s Track and Field Team with a 3.31 GPA. He is a senior getting his degree in Communication Studies.
The recipient for the Women’s Tennis team was Cade Pierson. She is a junior earning her degree in Psychology, with a 3.33 GPA.
Maud Ranger received the award for the Women’s Basketball team. She is a junior that has a GPA of 3.47 and is majoring in Economics and Business.
Grant Gardner was the award winner for the Baseball Team. He is a senior in the Economics and Business department, with a 3.59 GPA.
Since its inception, the Golden Eagle Award has been generously sponsored by Pacific Beverage Company and Pete and Gerd Jordano. It is one of the most prestigious honors the Westmont Athletic Department gives out and represents what Westmont looks for in their student-athletes. All the participants’ families, coaches, and faculty members including President Gayle Beebe attended the event, making it one of the best nights of the year for Westmont Sports.
