Earlier this year, Westmont Athletic Director Dave Odell announced that the school will be introducing Men and Women’s Golf Teams starting in the Fall 2019 semester. Dr. Tom Knecht, who will continue teaching in political science on campus, will be coaching both the men and women’s squads next year.
Odell described Knecht as “a valued member of the Westmont community and a beloved professor. He is also a huge supporter of Westmont athletics and quite a golfer.” Knecht played football at Stanford University, before earning his doctorate at UCSB and his current research is focused on politics in sports.
Knecht has already signed multiple athletes to the men’s and women’s teams, and is excited to bring more talented individuals to campus to golf next year. “We’ve signed some very solid players to both the men’s and women’s teams,” said Knecht. “We do still need female players, so if there are any Westmont students interested in playing golf please let me know.” Knecht has said how excited he is to build a culture for Westmont golf, saying he wants to “build a team dynamic that is healthy and supportive.”
”Our goals are to have fun and play competitive golf,” said Knecht, when asked about next year’s goals. “I don’t have any set expectations for scores or outcomes. I’m more interested in the process and my players using every day to get better.”
His decision to join the team was an easy one, as Knecht explains, “I enjoy investing in the lives of Westmont students, and the golf course is a great place to do that.“
It will be an exciting sports season next year with the the inaugural seasons of the Westmont men’s and women’s golf teams.
