Jared Brown: growth and grit

Gretchen Scherrei, Staff Writer

Westmont’s own Jared Brown was awarded the title of Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Athlete of the Week. Brown, a third-year basketball guard, received the honor following an impressive game and win against The Master’s University on Nov. 20.

Jared Brown is a 21-year-old kinesiology major from La Palma, California. Recruited near the end of his junior year of high school, Brown committed to Westmont and spent the last three years playing for the Warriors. Through the difficulties of remote learning, playing through COVID-19, and the stresses of being a student and an athlete, Brown has more than earned his recognition as a student-athlete. “I love competing and overcoming challenges,” he shared.

Brown began playing basketball at the age of five. He credits this to his father, who has “been a huge reason why [he] started playing” in the first place.

Brown began playing competitive basketball at age nine and has played ever since, through middle school and high school before continuing his career at Westmont. While athletics initially drew his attention to the school, Brown “knew it was the right fit” for him after visiting the school and meeting the coaches. “I believe God was calling me here,” he exclaimed.

Jared’s time at Westmont has been one of growth, both on and off the court. He explained that “Westmont has shown me the importance of hard work both on the court and in the classroom, which has been amazing so far.”

This positive experience is largely due to his coaches and team at Westmont. Brown counts it as “a blessing to play under legendary Coach Moore, who retired last year, and it is currently a blessing to play under Coach Boucher.” He has gained a lot of basketball knowledge from their guidance the past few years, but he is grateful for their life teachings as well. Brown also credits much of his growth to some “pretty special teammates that are my brothers.”

When looking toward the future, Brown hopes to win at least two more GSAC championships and a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championship during his time at Westmont. He plans to follow a successful career at Westmont by playing professional basketball overseas.

Achieving the honor of GSAC Athlete of the Week adds Brown’s name to a long list of Westmont athletes who represent the college well, on and off the court. On being awarded this honor, Brown said, “Receiving GSAC player of the week felt good to know that my hard work is slowly paying off. I would not have been able to receive this award without the help of my amazing teammates and coaches.”

With Brown’s leadership, he and the rest of the men’s basketball team will be on the road to success as they enter the second half of their season.
