Women’s basketball gets first road win

The No. 8 Westmont women’s basketball team won its second game of the season and picked up its first road win on Saturday, defeating Cal Lutheran 78-55 in Thousand Oaks.

The Warriors trailed 16-19 after the first quarter before outscoring the Regals 25-15 in the second quarter to take a 41-34 halftime advantage. Westmont outscored Cal Lutheran by nine points in the third and by seven points in the fourth, winning by a comfortable 23-point margin.

After allowing the Regals to shoot 50% from the field in the first half, the Warriors picked up their defensive intensity in the second half, as Cal Lutheran shot a mere 28% from the field after halftime, including 16.7% from 3-point range.

Iyree Jarrett led all scorers with 18 points, shooting seven for 11 from the field, including three for six from 3-point range. Taylor Rarick shot four for eight from behind the arc to score 12 points, while Kaitlin Larson was the other Westmont player in double figures with 11.

Gabriella Stoll had a near double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Stefanie Berberabe and Maud Ranger each brought down six rebounds. Berberabe also contributed eight points, five assists, and five steals.

The Warriors return home this weekend to host the Best Western Plus Carpinteria Inn Classic, which will include three of the top-10 teams in the NAIA (No. 4 The Master’s, No. 6 Our Lady of the Lake). Westmont will take on Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday before playing Antelope Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
