At the beginning of this semester, Cupcakes and Clubs introduced many new clubs, one of them being the Run Club. This club is led by Andres Leon and Jack Vanden Heuvel. In starting the club, they saw a need for a running community at Westmont. Andres says, “People run alone on campus all the time, yet running can be miserable when you are alone. Running together not only makes it easier, but it allows it to become a social activity.” Their goal is to present running as a welcoming experience that can create new friendships and communities.
Running for many can seem unenjoyable and daunting. However, Jack and Andres believe that there are benefits to running with others that make it worthwhile. “Not only does running improve physical health, it is also a way to connect with other people. When you have someone by your side experiencing the same thing as you, running becomes easier and a lot more enjoyable,” Jack suggests, “Having a group of other runners to challenge, laugh with or just talk to makes group runs all the more fun!” For those who are interested yet slightly hesitant, within the run club, there are little to no requirements.
Jack and Andres welcome anyone and everyone who is interested in joining a community that not only encourages exercise and healthy lifestyles, but also a bonding community that pushes and sticks together. Jack explains, “All you need is a pair of shoes and excitement. There is no commitment at all, just show up where you’re ready to enjoy some time jogging with friends. We all start the run together and then groups break apart depending on experience levels.” So, this club truly is for everyone! There are also groups that walk so you can take it at your pace.
The club is low-pressure, low-commitment which gives ease to members with busy schedules. Andres says, “We start together and we end together. Within that window, small groups form…Students can expect it to be whatever they want it to be. There are no guidelines on distance or speed, the only requirement we have is that you do it together. We also drive to coffee together after our runs and enjoy some post-run banter!”
Jack stresses, “We’re extremely excited to get our feet off the ground and get this club running. We’re most excited to meet new people. We hope to see you out there!” For those interested, the Run Club meets Saturday mornings around nine and you can stay updated on their Instagram account, @westmontrun!
