Fashion brand to watch: Selkie

Fashion Week

Remember when you were, like, 12 and watched Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” music video for the first time? Remember when you asked yourself, “Can I dress like T-Swift in this video forever?” Me too.

My childhood desires went unfulfilled for the longest time, but I recently discovered the brand Selkie, and all my feminine romance dreams are finally being realized.

Selkie is a new brand designed by the familiar fashion name Kimberly Gordon, who started the brand Wildfox. Gordon created Selkie after a tragic fallout with leadership at Wildfox. Forging her own path, Gordon’s collection is heavily inspired by folklore and romanticism with its wild, fantastical and dainty pieces.

You’ve probably heard of Selkie’s bestseller “The Puff Dress.” This dress features big puffy sleeves with a short bodice and a bouncy skirt that puffs out. The Puff Dress is like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants in a dress. If you head over to Selkie’s Instagram and scroll through the feed, it has a woman of every shape, size and skin tone donning this dress. What I love about this piece, specifically, is the amount of space it takes up. It’s dreamy and daring, a combo that is usually difficult to pair, but Selkie does it effortlessly.

Another reason you should keep your eye on Selkie is because of its transparency to customers. The brand leadership is fully open about where they get materials, where factories are located, why factories are located outside of the United States, and what sustainability and ethical responsibility means to the brand.

It’s pretty unusual for a company to explain why its factories are out of the States, but the brand explains why it was important to have manufacturing in China and how the factory is WRAP-certified.

In layman’s terms, this basically means that the factory respects its workers and pays them a living wage — which many fashion companies fail to do.

Selkie will be a brand you’ll definitely hear about more often and see on your feed as influencers and celebrities post their coveted Selkie pieces. I am in love with the brand’s sequined pieces and will be making a purchase soon.

Keep your eyes peeled for updates from Selkie! You will not be disappointed.
